Description & Analysis

Despite a fairly generous mintage, this issue is quite elusive with the popular feature of a fully struck head to the Liberty figure. This flaw is more or less characteristic of the series, but 1917-D Type 2 is among the tougher dates to find well struck. In his book on this coin series, J. H. Cline reported "5% STRUCK WITH FULL HEADS." While it would more correct to say that this figure represents the number existing today, rather than the number struck with FH details (which is unknown), it still indicates how scarce this issue is with the desired feature. The number of certified FH coins is higher than one would expect, since such coins are more likely to be submitted for certification.
