Description & Analysis

Midway through 1917, the U.S. Mint altered the design of the Standing Liberty quarter. The largest and most obvious difference was the stars to the left and right of the eagle were enlarged and three of them were moved to below the eagle, which was also shifted upwards. Additionally, chain mail was added on the obverse to cover Liberty's exposed right breast.

The 1917-D Type 2 quarter was the first in a long line of weakly struck coins from the Denver Mint. Coins with a fully struck eagle and Liberty's head bring a large premium to those which are not as strongly struck.
