Description & Analysis

Midway through 1917, the U.S. Mint altered the design of the Standing Liberty quarter. The largest and most obvious difference was the stars to the left and right of the eagle were enlarged and three of them were moved to below the eagle, which was also shifted upwards. Additionally, chain mail was added on the obverse to cover Liberty's exposed right breast.

Only some 1.5 million Type 1 Denver-Mint coins were struck before the change, making this issue much less common than the Type 2. However, the Type 1 issues were pretty well struck, which is evident in the NGC population reports which show that more have been graded in gem and above with full head than without.
