Description & Analysis

By the time that the two western mints received their dies for 1917 quarter dollars, it was already anticipated that the design would be revised. This may be why relatively few pieces were coined of the 1917-D and 1917-S Type 1 quarters. The demand for coins was quite heavy during the stepped up economy of this war year, yet the mints seem to have held back on production until the new dies were ready.

A good number of 1917-D Type 1 quarters have survived in Mint State or just lightly worn for the sole reason that these were the first examples of this coin design encountered by persons living in the regions served by the Denver Mint. They were preserved for their novelty, and they remain fairly common in grades from VF through MS 65. Full Head examples are readily available, though less so than for the Philadelphia Mint edition.

The peculiar fact that coins of this type lost their dates very quickly in circulation would have rendered this a rare issue in lower grades, were it not for the fact that all Type 1 quarters of the Denver Mint were coined in this year alone and thus remain identifiable even when dateless. The value of dateless examples is minimal, but they still function as hole fillers for beginning collectors.

J. H. Cline refers to as many as three mintmark sizes for this issue. New mintmark puncheons were created for Denver and San Francisco early this year, and this could account for two styles of similar size letters D, but any other variances would be the product of the depth to which the mintmark was punched into the die.

The Standing Liberty Quarter is notable for its lack of varieties, but a nice doubled-die reverse is known for this issue. The doubling is most visible in the Latin motto.
