The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
While some dates are easily obtainable in the lower circulated grades, no Seated Quarter from the 1840s should be considered common in Mint State. Although not widely recognized as such, the 1841 is just such a condition rarity, with Larry Briggs assigning Mint State survivors an R.6 rating in his 1991 monograph on this series.
