Description & Analysis

A single die pair produced this paltry mintage, and the reverse die was the same one used for 1870-CC. In his book on the Carson City Mint, Rusty Goe reported that the first delivery of 1871-CC quarters was made in February and consisted of 3,490 coins.

It was the policy of Nevada's mint to not release the fractional silver coins into circulation for its first few years, but obviously this happened at some point, as most survivors are heavily worn. Goe estimated that 35-45 1871-CC quarters are known today, with three or four in Mint State. Larry Briggs put the number at just three.
