Description & Analysis

About two dozen proofs are known of the 1856 quarter dollar, a significant advance from all previous dates. The number of fractional proofs from this period is always smaller than for silver dollars, and it's likely that the dollars include a number of later restrikes. The scarcity of currency pieces for the silver dollar would account for such collector interest.

A single die marriage is known for proofs, and the obverse die is slightly doubled. The reverse reveals a slight bulge extending from beneath the first A in AMERICA to the L in DOL.
