Description & Analysis

Walter Breen, in his 1988 encyclopedia, stated that two proofs are known. One is certainly confirmed, though its obverse die is shared with currency strikes and displays a repunched date (Briggs Obverse 1). The reverse die is that seen on 1846-50 proofs and has many vertical lines in the shield recut into the horizontal lines above and the curved bottom of the shield.

The Kaufman specimen was struck with mis-aligned dies, a most unusual feature given the care with which proofs typically were made. It may in fact be a restrike, perhaps made at the same time as the proof silver dollars of this date.
