Description & Analysis

The proof quarter dollars of 1846 are more available than for previous dates, but they are certainly still rare. Walter Breen speculated that as many as 12 survive, but the bar for proof status was lower in the period he studied, and some of these were likely MS PL (prooflike). The real number is more likely eight to ten pieces.

Larry Briggs assigned Die Pair 4-F to the proofs, noting that the reverse had its vertical shield lines (red stripes) extending into the horizontal lines of the shield's chief (blue field). This phenomenon is often seen on Seated Liberty coins, as the hubbing process did not always fully transfer the more delicate features, which then required some touch-up by the engraver.
