Description & Analysis

The Specie Resumption Act of January 14, 1875 authorized the paying out of fractional silver coins in exchange for either gold or paper money at par. With the price of silver falling throughout that decade, this action was a reasonable step toward restoring hard money to daily commerce. The U. S. Mint responded by producing many millions of dimes, quarters and halves over the next few years, so many in fact that coining had to be reigned in by 1878.

The 1875(P) half dollar is a common issue across all grades, though gem Mint State pieces are in short supply. Perhaps due to such a high mintage, some of these coins are not fully struck, but collectors can afford to be picky.

As of 1993, Wiley and Bugert had identified 11 die marriages from the same number of obverse dies paired with nine reverses. When Bugert's Die Registry for 1873-91 Philadelphia half dollars is published, these numbers will certainly rise. There are no collectible varieties for this date, unless one pursues the four different collar gauges known: 144, 145, 154 or 156 reeds.
