Description & Analysis

The addition of arrowheads at the date starting April 1, 1873 to denote a slight increase in weight had the effect of dividing production of the 1873-CC half dollars into two major varieties. Thus, coins that would have been scarce to begin with were made more so by reducing each variety's total. Since the No Arrows halves were technically obsolete, many were destroyed at the mint, making this second edition the more available of the two. Even so, examples are scarce to rare across all grades. Mint State coins are very rare and highly prized.

The Carson City Mint received six new obverse dies with arrowheads on March 31, one day before the new coins could be issued. No reverse dies were shipped, as enough were on hand already.

Six die marriages are known of the 1873-CC Arrows half dollar, these comprised of five obverse dies and two reverses. Three of the marriages used a prolific Large CC reverse die that is also seen on Carson City halves dated 1871, 1872 and 1876! The other three marriages feature the newer style Small CC, and the two sizes appear to be about equal in rarity. All 1873-CC half dollars were coined with a collar having 154 reeds, so the addition of a CC mintmark to a Philadelphia coin is easily detected by comparing edges.

One of the Large CC die pairings displays a misplaced date, with multiple extra numerals punched into either the denticles or the border. On a common date coin, this variety would be eagerly sought, but the value of all 1873-CC half dollars is high enough to discourage collecting by varieties.

NGC Price and Value Guides Disclaimer

Disclaimer: The prices listed in the various NGC Price and Value Guides are compiled from a number of independent, third party sources in the numismatic community which NGC believes to be reliable. Prices provided are averages, not specific prices for individual coins. Further, because these prices are only updated from time to time, they do not reflect short term pricing trends, which are quite common and are often quite dramatic, given the volatile nature of the collectible coin marketplace. This is especially true for rare coins, where there are fewer sales and greater variations in sale prices. For all of these reasons, the prices in these guides are designed to serve merely as one of many measures and factors that coin buyers and sellers can use in determining coin values. These prices are not intended, and should not be relied upon, to replace the due diligence and — when appropriate — expert consultation that coin buyers and sellers should undertake when entering into a coin transaction.
