Description & Analysis

1854 is the first year for which proof half dollars exist in sufficient numbers that a well-funded collector has a reasonable chance of acquiring one. About 20 pieces are believed to survive, and this is double the number for even the most available of pre-1854 issues. Inquiries from numismatists about proof coins were coming into the Mint frequently enough that it was deemed advisable to coin a certain quantity in advance of orders, and this program would be formalized starting in 1858.
