Description & Analysis

This is the rarest of Seated Liberty Half Dollars, with a mere four examples known. All are well worn, with no Mint State survivors, and the least worn coin grading Very Fine.

Early in 1853 Congress approved a reduction in the weight of the fractional silver coins of about seven per cent. All denominations were coined in modest numbers before the new weight standards went into effect, with only the New Orleans Mint striking a unknown number of half dollars. At least one 1853-O No Arrows half dollar is known to have been struck New Year's Day from a newspaper report of the time, but how many more were struck before they became obsolete went unrecorded.

It's also unknown how many obverse dies were shipped to the New Orleans Mint for arrowless half dollars, but the one obverse used for the surviving specimens was paired with a reverse identified as having coined 1852-O half dollars, as well.
