Description & Analysis

The vast majority of 1842-O half dollars were coined with the Large Letters reverse type adopted that year. These comprise 11 of the 13 known die marriages for the year, and four collars were employed having reed counts of 143, 144, 145 or 146. All reverse dies feature a Large O mintmark.

Mint State examples of this issue are quite rare, though they are often overshadowed by the even more rare Small Date, Small Letters edition. Circulated examples are moderately scarce in the higher grades.

The one desirable variety is VP-001 (WB-103), which has a misplaced numeral 4 visible within Liberty's gown.
