Description & Analysis

This large mintage issue is common in all circulated grades, though it is less available in Mint State than the most common P-Mint half dimes of the 1840s.

There are several repunched date varieties, and attributing these has proved to be a real challenge for numismatists. Traditionally, these have been lumped into two categories: 1849/8 and 1849/6, but the latter is not really distinct as to the underlying numeral or numerals. Unless and until the matter is proved with certainty, NGC will label these coins as simply RPD with the Fivaz/Stanton number.
