Description & Analysis

Just two examples are known of the 1866 proof dollar lacking the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. These were not sold publicly by the Mint, and it's presumed that they were fancies provided to influential persons associated with the Mint or having good connections to it. Both have been certified by NGC, the Virgil Brand specimen grading PF 63+ and the Willis DuPont specimen grading PF 65.

Osburn and Cushing tentatively identified a single die marriage for this issue. The obverse is shared with one marriage of 1866 dollars having the motto, while the reverse appears to be one shared with a very rare marriage of the 1865 proof dollars.

The 1866 No Motto proof dollars are believed to have been struck shortly after the year of their dating, but the number coined is unknown. Given the prestige of this issue, it's likely that the two known are the only ones made. Both the 1866 No Motto half dollar and quarter dollar are represented by single specimens, and it's likely that they were owned by a single person when new, along with one of the two dollars.

NGC Price and Value Guides Disclaimer

Disclaimer: The prices listed in the various NGC Price and Value Guides are compiled from a number of independent, third party sources in the numismatic community which NGC believes to be reliable. Prices provided are averages, not specific prices for individual coins. Further, because these prices are only updated from time to time, they do not reflect short term pricing trends, which are quite common and are often quite dramatic, given the volatile nature of the collectible coin marketplace. This is especially true for rare coins, where there are fewer sales and greater variations in sale prices. For all of these reasons, the prices in these guides are designed to serve merely as one of many measures and factors that coin buyers and sellers can use in determining coin values. These prices are not intended, and should not be relied upon, to replace the due diligence and — when appropriate — expert consultation that coin buyers and sellers should undertake when entering into a coin transaction.
