Description & Analysis

Very early in 1873 Chief Coiner A. L. Snowden complained that the date punches for that year seemed to read 1878, as numeral 3 was nearly closed. The Engraving Department rectified this by cutting down the balls of the 3 on each of the several different sizes of date punches. The coins which resulted from the new dies have been labeled Open 3 by numismatists.

This modification came just shortly before arrowheads were added to all the fractional silver denominations to signify a new weight standard, so the resulting mintages of Open 3 No Arrows coins were very small.

Surprisingly, this issue is not all that rare. Even Mint State pieces are available to the advanced Seated Dime collector. Four die marriages have been identified, none of them used for proofs, and this number calls into question the small mintage assigned to this variety by numismatic researchers. It is a reconstruction based on studies of the available documents, but the number of die marriages and the overall availability of this variety are at odds with the 60,000 figure.
