Description & Analysis

Nearly all United States coin denominations underwent improvements during the years 1858-61. While some of these changes were so slight as to go unrecognized by contemporary numismatists, the very obvious revisions to the dime were inescapable. These changes coincided with the employment of Assistant Engraver Anthony C. Paquet, though they are almost all attributed to his superior, James B. Longacre, as that was the custom of the time.

San Francisco alone coined dimes of the earlier style in 1860, the Philadelphia and New Orleans pieces all displaying the changes that would continue through the end of this series in 1891. Most obviously, the obverse stars were omitted, and in their place appeared the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, which had formerly appeared on the reverse. This relocation was prompted by the adoption of a much more elaborate cereal wreath in place of the simple laurel wreath of earlier dimes. The tall, narrow lettering seen on 1860-91 dimes is a hallmark of Anthony C. Paquet's work, further pointing to his hand in the sculpting of the new models.

Worn examples of the 1860(P) dime are fairly plentiful, yet Mint State pieces are moderately scarce. Most such coins are sharply struck, far more so than half dimes of this same design.

The most desirable variety for this issue is F-106, which shows doubling in the legend and on Liberty's lips.
