Description & Analysis

Though included in the Judd book on pattern coins as Number 233, this so-called "Transitional" dime is unlikely to have been a true pattern or trial piece. It combines the old style 1859 obverse with stars and the new style reverse adopted for mass production the following year. Thus, it bears no indication of national origin. Most scholars believe that this coin was struck as a fancy, or piece de caprice, sales of which benefited the Mint's own cabinet of coins and medals.

About 15 examples are known from an unrecorded mintage.
