Description & Analysis

This abortive issue represents the final emission of dimes at the 1837 weight standard. After several years in which the nation's silver coins were worth more than their face value, Congress finally acted early in 1853 to reduce the weight of each denomination of fractional silver about seven percent. This permitted the coins to circulate freely.

The entire mintage was made in two deliveries of 55,000 pieces on February 17 and 40,000 two days later. Whether all of these were released remains unknown, and those on hand after the new act became law would have been melted. Examples are scarce across all grades, but a disproportionate share of them are Mint State. Walter Breen reported that numismatist Harold P. Newlin found a small hoard of unworn pieces several decades after their coinage.

The only variety of note is a clashed die state of F-101.
