Description & Analysis

The majority, about two-thirds, of 1873 three-cent pieces were coined from dies having the revised, Open 3 date logotype. This edition is slightly more common than its predecessor, but it is rare in Gem Mint State (MS 65 and higher). Since the Mint had largely overcome its initial difficulties with the copper-nickel alloy, most coins of this date are reasonably well struck.

There are no varieties noted for the Open 3 issue.
