The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
David Bowers, in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, says that: 'Many of the 1,039 Proofs have been cleaned, a situation common to most of the earlier Proof dates in the Morgan series. At the time, it was considered permissible to lightly clean Proofs to maintain their brilliance.'
