Description & Analysis

In 1782, the Second Continental Congress selected the Bald Eagle as the fledgling country's national bird. Hundreds of years later, the bird has come to signify freedom and strength. However, lack of protection for the species brought it to the brink of extinction by the 1970's.

The Endangered Species Act of 1973 helped turn the tide for the Bald Eagle, and the species has since recovered immensely. In honor of this recovery as well as the 35th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act, Congress authorized three different coins honoring the majestic bird.

The three coins authorized included proof and mint state versions of a $5 gold coin, silver dollar, and clad half dollar. Surcharges from the sales of the coins were paid to the American Eagle Foundation of Tennessee which helps support the continued protection of the national bird.
