Description & Analysis

The production of nickels was suspended early in 1885 after fewer than 1.5 million were coined. This was due to both a reduction in demand and problems with the Mint's supplier of planchets. Examples are scarce to rare across all grades, with Mint State pieces being particularly elusive. Until the 1980s, most advanced collectors simply filled this slot with a proof, as those are much more available, but currency pieces are now prized for their special status as rarities.

Given its limited mintage, it's not surprising that no varieties have surfaced for the 1885 nickel. Of course, a variety would have to be major to surpass the large premium already attached to any 1885 nickel for its rarity as a date.
