The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
After numerous scandals in the Carson City mint and suffering from a pronounced lack of friends in Washington political circles, it was finally decided to close the Nevada mint after 1893 and turn it into an assay office. The 1893-CC Half Eagle has always been a popular coin with collectors as it is the final year of issue. It is generally available in the lower grades of Uncirculated, but high grade examples are seldom encountered.
