The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Whether a business strike or a proof, the 1872 half eagle is a coin of extraordinary rarity. Only 1,660 business strikes were produced along with 30 proofs. Somewhere in the range of 12 to 15 proofs are believed to still exist today in all grades.
