NGC and PMG Remain Open and Fully Operational >
The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
From an original mintage of 160,675 pieces comes this underappreciated Half Eagle rarity. More difficult to locate than the 1843, 1847, 1851, 1852, 1853, and 1860 among No Motto Liberty Fives from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1854 is usually encountered in VF or XF grades. The limited number of Mint State examples extant seem to be clustered around the MS62 level.
