The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Extremely rare in any grade, the proof 1875 is 'one of the members of the charmed circle of Gold Proofs with original mintages of 20 pieces,' as Taglione said. Proofs are easily distinguishable from business strikes (also extremely rare) by the position of the date high in the exergual field and with the tip of the 5 almost touching the bust of Liberty. Perhaps only 12-15 proofs survive in all grades today.
