The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The rarity of the proof 1865 quarter eagle is only overshadowed by the even rarer business strikes of this date. Only 25 proofs were struck in this final year of the Civil War, and today estimates of survivors vary from a low of 8-10 (Akers) to 13 to 15 possibly remaining (Taglione).
