Description & Analysis

The turbulent economic conditions of the Civil War probably meant that Quarter Eagles were melted in 1864 almost as quickly as the Philadelphia Mint could strike them. It is little wonder, therefore, that the Mint limited its production of this denomination to a mere 2,824 business strikes [this year]. This meager mintage was divided into 424 pieces on February 25 and 2,400 pieces on December 6. Unlike on proofs of this issue, Liberty's ear is filled on all extant business strikes. Akers (1975) estimates that only 7-8 coins are extant, but the certified population indicates a slightly higher figure. Akers also stated that the 1864 Quarter Eagle was unknown in Mint State in the numismatic community of the mid-1970s. Although this has since changed...this issue is still among the premier condition rarities in this long-lived series.
