Description & Analysis

1908 was the first year of issue for the new Indian half eagle design. The coins featured sunken-relief as opposed to the raised relief on all other United States coinage issues. While not appreciated at the time, the coins are very popular with collectors today.

The Denver Mint struck 148.000 Indian $5 gold pieces in 1908. While not a large amount, it was still much more than were struck at San Francisco, where the mintage was only 82.000 coins. However, even though this coin had a larger mintage, they were not as well made and didn't survive in high grade as often as the San Francisco coins. In fact, NGC has only graded 5 in gem with non higher, as opposed to the San Fran issue, of which NGC has graded 17 in gem with 18 higher. (8/2016)
