Description & Analysis

First struck in 1986, the Gold Eagle coin program is one of the world's most popular gold coin programs. The coins are available in 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1/2oz, and 1oz sizes, with face values of $5, $10, $25, and $50, respectively.

In 1999, the U.S. Mint accidentally released a small number of mint state gold eagles that were struck using proof dies. The dies were not finished, so the fields are not mirrored, however the coin still bear the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint. These have proved to be quite rare and are worth a hefty premium. Even though they were struck with proof dies, only around 2.2% of the 1999 $10 gold eagles with the W mint mark graded MS70 at NGC. (6/2016)
