The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1857 is a very rare striking in proof format, struck the year before larger production proof mintages began for other U.S. coins. The exact mintage of proof 1857 proof gold dollars is unknown, but it is presumably very small, as pre-1858 proof coins were distributed as singles not as sets, as in later years. It is believed that 8-10 separate proofs are known today.
