Description & Analysis

This is another date that is lumped in with the common issues of its type, though it's noteworthy that gems are rare.

Five die marriages resulted from the use of four obverse and three reverse dies. One would normally expect more marriages from that many dies, but it appears from the cracks often seen that the dies failed quickly enough to preclude being used more than once. Indeed, Obverse 4 is the only die of the seven that was employed in two marriages, and both of these are are tough ones. B-5 is the rarest one for this date, with little more than a dozen pieces known.
