Description & Analysis

The 1833 quarter dollar is slightly scarcer than most other dates in the 1831-38 series, but it is by no means rare. A modest number of Mint State coins have survived, but gems are very elusive.

As in 1832, a single obverse die was paired with two reverses, and these marriages are of more or less equal availability. They are easily distinguished in either one of two ways. On B-1 the shield gules (red vertical stripes represented by raised lines) each have three parallel lines, while B-2 has just two lines to each of the gules. Also, B-2 has portions of the reverse legend repunched. Specifically, the F in OF and first A in AMERICA are duplicated to the left of the correctly placed letters. The normal reverse of B-1 was also utilized for one 1832 marriage and two of 1831. This reinforces how the Philadelphia Mint was thrifty with dies and didn't necessarily use them solely in the year for which they were dated.
