Description & Analysis

As the collecting of United States coins grew in popularity during the mid 19th Century, collectors became aware that very rare quarter dollars existed with the dates 1823 and 1827. As happened with so many rare issues, restrikes were produced to satisfy the demand for completeness.

The 1827/3 B-2 marriage utilized the same obverse die as for 1823 and 1827 B-1. It was paired with the reverse die used previously for 1819 B-2, and there are two classes of 1827/3 B-2 quarters. Just two examples are known from unrusted dies and struck over cut down Draped Bust Quarters of the 1804-07 issue. It has been speculated that these two pieces were struck at the same time as 1827/3 B-1 or, perhaps, even before it. Since the reverse die of B-2 was transitional with an 1819 marriage, while the reverse of B-1 was transitional with quarters dated 1828, this seems plausible. Another nine examples are known from the 1827/3 B-2 marriage that show extensive die rust on both dies. These are believed to have been coined decades later. There was a flurry of restrike and novodel coining at the U. S. Mint during the late 1860s and '70s, so this provides a likely time frame. These later restrikes were produced on copper planchets, as well, five such coins being known.
