Description & Analysis

This date was not issued for circulation, and a mere nine examples are traceable today. These are traditionally classified as proofs but, as with the 1894-S dimes, are most likely prooflike strikings from fresh dies. This is a matter of semantics, as all were of similar quality when new.

Like many quarter dollars of the mid 1820s, this issue was produced with a die that had been overdated not once but twice. Its obverse die was used also for the rare 1823/2 quarters. Little evidence of the underlying numerals is visible, as the die was extensively polished prior to minting of the 1827 coins. Its reverse die remained in service to produce the B-1 marriage of 1828.

A single worn specimen is known, most likely having been spent by someone unaware of its significance. The other eight pieces have been preserved as special coins, though mishandling has resulted in fairly low numeric grades for proofs.
