Description & Analysis

The year 1839 was a transitional one for the half dollar, and its production was divided between this Capped Bust type and two subtypes of the new Seated Liberty design. Thus, the mintage of the old type halves was less than half that of 1837-38. Nevertheless, this date is not rare. A fair number of Mint State coins survive, but gems are very rare.

Some eight die marriages are known from the pairing of four obverses with seven reverses. GR-1 is an important rarity that is visually distinctive and is described in the entry that follows this one. Of the remaining varieties, GR-2 and GR-3 are scarce, while the others are fairly common.
