Description & Analysis

In early 1834, William Kneass reworked the entire obverse master die for John Reich's Capped Bust half dollar. Although we do not know whether this was done to improve the coining process or give Liberty a well deserved face-lift after nearly thirty years of production, it is obvious that the changes are not readily evident to the novice numismatist. Beginning in 1834, Liberty's head was slenderized and given more suitable facial features. While her neck was lengthened slightly, her bust was reduced and given a downward slope. Despite the relative unimportance of these changes, serious Bust half dollar collectors consider these changes a distinct sub-type and one that is worthy of the finest type collections.
