Description & Analysis

The 1829 half dollar is a common issue that has a good supply of Mint State survivors. Gems are scarce but available to advanced collectors.

Some 20 die marriages are known for this date, which employed 11 obverse dies and 16 reverses. Two of the Overton varieties are overdates, and these are described in the entry which follows this one.

Of the remaining varieties, one features the Large Letters typical of previous years, another has Medium Letters, while the remainder have Small Letters. The Medium Letters reverse is similar enough to the Large Letters variety that the two are lumped together in most guide books and priced at a modest premium over the Small Letters varieties. The only die marriage that is genuinely rare is O-120, but O-104 and O-106 are scarce enough to be sought by series specialists.
