Description & Analysis

The coining of half dollars by the U. S. Mint set another record in 1827, though it would last just four years. Such a large coinage required many dies, 29 obverses and 34 reverses being known to numismatists. These were used for a total of 50 die marriages, a record that would last through the end of this series in 1836. With so many dies already known, it's quite possible that additional marriages may yet be discovered.

Overton varieties 101 through 103 are overdates, and these are described fully in the entry following this one. Of the remaining varieties, two feature a Curled Base 2 that is transitional with 1828, and these merit a separate line entry in popular catalogs. O-147 is scarce, but O-146 is common enough to satisfy those seeking a Curled Base 2 coin. All of the remaining varieties display the familiar Square Base 2, and three are quite rare: O-148, O-149 and O-150. Others scarce enough to carry a premium among series specialists are O-116, O-122, O-123, O-124, O-127, O-137, O-144 and O-145.

For the more common varieties, Mint State coins are quite plentiful for coins of this period. Gems are likewise available, albeit at large premiums.
