Description & Analysis

The six obverse dies and seven reverses for 1820 were mixed to create some eight die marriages. Two of these are overdated 1820/19, and these are treated in the entry which follows.

Several different numeral punches were used for the obverse dies of this year, making for an interesting collection in their own right. Variety O-104 is slightly scarce, but without any appealing fatures it is of little general interest. More attention has been focused on the scarcer O-107, which is distinguished by letters E that are lacking serifs on their left sides from a defective punch. The premium attached has more to do with the overall rarity of this die marriage than the appeal of the missing serifs.

The more common varieties of 1820 half dollars carry no premium below Mint State, such coins being fairly scarce as compared to the several dates preceding. The reason for a significantly lower mintage in 1820 is unknown.
