Description & Analysis

This issue enjoyed a mintage of more than two million pieces, a testament to the importance of the half dollar at a time when other denominations, save for the cent, were struck in far smaller numbers. A fair number of Mint State coins have been certified, but gems are quite scarce.

Some 14 obverse dies were paired in combinations with 13 reverses to produce the 15 die marriages bearing this date. Six of these were overdated 1819/8, indicating that several of the obverse dies prepared for 1818 remained on hand at the end of that year. These are described in the entry that follows this one. None of the non-overdate varieties are rare or even scarce in circulated grades.
