Description & Analysis

The half dimes dated 1797 are known with either 15 stars, 16 stars or 13 stars. The dies were prepared in that order, though it's not certain that all 1797-dated half dimes were struck in that year. The first two dies represented the number of states when they were prepared in 1796, with the final numeral omitted until needed. When it became obvious that adding a star for each new state was creating clutter, the decision was made to henceforth recognize only the original 13 states on our coins.

These three obverse dies were paired with three reverses for a total of four die marriages. LM-1 (photos) and LM-2 are the ones more often seen, while LM-3 and LM-4 are rare.

These coins are frequently plagued with poor strikes, adjustment lines from the planchet preparation process or, as in this instance, die-clash impressions. Mint State examples of any variety are highly prized by both type collectors and half dime specialists.
