Description & Analysis

Mint Records indicate that 54,454 silver dollars were coined during the 1801 calendar year, however, the most likely number of dollars struck with the actual 1801 date, according to David Bowers in his 1993 Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the U.S., is probably around 35,000 pieces. This coinage was accomplished through the use of two obverse and four reverse dies. A total of four varieties were coined, and each is more or less the same rarity. Perhaps 2,000 to 3,000 1801 silver dollars still exist today in all grades, with Mint State examples being major rarities.
