Description & Analysis

The reported mintage for silver dollars during 1796 was 79,920, but many of these may have been struck from useable dies dated 1795 of either the Flowing Hair or Draped Bust type. The Mint was not too particular about such things, as it was hard pressed to produce coins in a timely manner and in the number desired. There's reason to believe that the 1796-dated coins were struck beyond that year and as late as 1798. This conclusion is based on die-state evidence, which provides a more reliable indicator of the sequence in which each die marriage was coined, regardless of the date those coins bear.

Some six die marriages are known for 1796-dated silver dollars, these comprised of four obverse dies paired in various combinations with four reverses. Since it was the practice of the mint's engravers to apply as many stars to the obverse as there were states in the growing nation, the 15 stars seen on all four obverse dies indicate that these were created prior to Tennessee's June 1, 1796 admission as the 16th state. Die marriages BB-63 and BB-66 are somewhat scarce, while BB-62 and BB-64 are extremely rare. The remaining two marriages are common enough to serve as good type coins.

NGC Price and Value Guides Disclaimer

Disclaimer: The prices listed in the various NGC Price and Value Guides are compiled from a number of independent, third party sources in the numismatic community which NGC believes to be reliable. Prices provided are averages, not specific prices for individual coins. Further, because these prices are only updated from time to time, they do not reflect short term pricing trends, which are quite common and are often quite dramatic, given the volatile nature of the collectible coin marketplace. This is especially true for rare coins, where there are fewer sales and greater variations in sale prices. For all of these reasons, the prices in these guides are designed to serve merely as one of many measures and factors that coin buyers and sellers can use in determining coin values. These prices are not intended, and should not be relied upon, to replace the due diligence and — when appropriate — expert consultation that coin buyers and sellers should undertake when entering into a coin transaction.
