Description & Analysis

There were just two die marriages for 1828 dimes, and this Small Date variety came first. It's believed that 90,000 of the 125,000 dimes coined during calendar year 1828 were actually dated 1827, leaving a net mintage of just 35,000 pieces dated 1828. This consisted of 15,000 coins delivered February 8 and another 20,000 on December 31. Scholars of the series have determined that all of these were Small Date pieces and that the Large Date dimes, which were struck the following year, are of unknown mintage.

The 1828 Small Date dime is somewhat more available than its Large Date brother, but neither is common in any grade. Mint State pieces are very elusive.
