Description & Analysis

The reverse of nearly all Chalmers shillings depicts two birds fighting over a worm, a design that has become iconic for Colonial Maryland numismatics. Researchers have long speculated on the meaning of this motif and some theories hold that it represents the American Revolution or, perhaps, infighting between the newly independent states.

Both long worm and short worm varieties are known with the long worm variant being slightly more common. An extremely rare Chalmers shilling type features 12 interlocking rings as the reverse design.

John Chalmers, an Annapolis, Maryland, silversmith struck silver threepence, sixpence and shillings in 1783, the year that the Treaty of Paris officially ended the American Revolution. These coins clearly circulated in Colonial Maryland and examples are seen in a wide range of grades.

The initials “TS” on reverse dies used to strike Chalmers sixpence are for Thomas Sparrow, the engraver of that die and possibly all of the Chalmers coinage. Sparrow was also an engraver of Maryland paper money.
