Description & Analysis

In addition to the mintage figure shown above, an alternative was provided by Walter Breen, who speculated that the net figure for ones actually dated 1805 was just 694,464. The balance of production for this year was supposed by him to include many 1804s.

Four die marriages are known for 1805, these taken from three obverses and three reverses. Oddly enough, each obverse has a different style of numeral 5. The most common is C-1, which combines a Medium 5 obverse with the familiar No Stems reverse used to coin half cents dated 1804 and 1806, as well. C-2 and C-3 both feature a Small 5, with C-2 being genuinely rare. C-4 has a Large 5 and is common, though C-1 remains the marriage most often seen in higher grades.
