Description & Analysis

The mintage figure supplied for this scarce date is a reconstruction by numismatic scholars, as the vast majority of cents reportedly coined during 1804 bore the date 1803.

Though all 1804 cents were coined from a single pair of dies, three major die states are known for this marriage, and these are sought by variety specialists. S-266a has unbroken dies, S-266b has a prominent die break affecting RTY in LIBERTY, and S-266c (photos) has an additional die break across letters MERI of AMERICA.
