Description & Analysis

All cents of 1836 feature the new style portrait adopted midway through 1835's coinage. Six obverse dies were paired with six reverses, resulting in a total of seven marriages (N-4 and N-6 shared a reverse die). There are no rare varieties for 1836, but N-4, -5 and -7 are scarce.

Mint State examples of this date are not rare, but they are seldom found with more than a hint of red color. N-2 (photos) is one of the more common varieties.
