Description & Analysis

Only a single pair of dies was used for the cents of 1809. Numeral 9 is repunched, with the first impression being quite faint.

Since the reported mintage for this date is a bit high for a single die marriage at that time, the coinage for 1809 almost certainly included some pieces dated 1808. Walter Breen suggested that the net mintage was actually 175,500.

This date is slightly scarce but not truly rare in worn condition. Mint State pieces, however, are very rare and essentially unknown with more than traces of original red color.
